We have a wealth of experience in tackling the issue of fish impingement and entrapment in power station cooling water intakes and the full range of environmental concerns associated with large-scale water abstraction. THA Aquatic have been appointed to provide consultancy and preliminary scheme designs for fish, lamprey and eel/elver passes for a range of power generation facilities across the UK and Europe.

THERMAL – HYDROPOWER – OIL & GAS

Founders Dr Andy Turnpenny and Richard Horsfield draw on a wealth of experience gained from formative years in environmental research for both the UK power industry and Environment Agency respectively.
Key team members have worked on all of the UK’s existing nuclear fleet. They have been instrumental in the development of ‘best practice’ in the design of nuclear plant seawater cooling systems and played an integral part in the permitting of the majority of ‘once through’ thermal stations now operating in the UK.
We provided expert fisheries assessments in relation to the Sizewell B nuclear build. In the latest NNB round, we have been key advisers on environmental aspects of cooling system design and operation for EDF’s Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C sites, Horizon’s Wylfa project and NuGen’s Moorside project to achieve BAT compliance.
We have also provided specialist advice on other UK and European power plants, including Belgium’s Doel nuclear station as well as Shoreham, Great Yarmouth, Staythorpe, Marchwood & Pembroke CCGT stations.
THA Aquatic personnel have been appointed to advise on a range of cooling water system design issues, including:

  • Cooling water intake design
  • Fish deterrent systems
  • Fish recovery and return systems (FRR)

Our proprietary STRIKER™ modelling software has played an integral part in the planning of hydropower generation schemes. Modelling turbine-induced fish injury rates, it has formed the basis of Scheme Passage Rate assessments.
In the case of our work with Tidal Lagoon Power this software strongly influenced refinements to the design of hydroelectric turbines, reducing predicted injury rates for delicate fish species by a factor of ten or more.
Publications and ‘best practice’ guidelines authored by THA Aquatic personnel form the basis of regulatory policy relating to environmental protection and power generation around aquatic habitats.

RIVER – TIDAL – WIND

Our experience spans all areas of renewable energy generated within freshwater, estuarine and marine environments.
THA Aquatic offers scientific, regulatory and technical advice to maximise the benefits of renewable energy exploitation, whilst ensuring minimal disruption to and negative impacts on, the associated aquatic environment.
We work closely with regulators, government bodies and operators to ensure regulatory compliance in the areas of run of river hydropower, off-shore wind and tidal power generation.
From working on small run-of-river hydropower schemes to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP) such as Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, we have represented clients in negotiations with stakeholders, acted as expert witnesses for DCO Examinations & public enquiries, and designed monitoring programmes to support development consents.
Utilising leading-edge science and technical excellence our aquatic ecologists are backed up by a fleet of survey vessels carrying the latest survey, monitoring and analysis equipment.
Our team of aquatic specialists hold the appropriate health & safety qualifications for vessel based surveys in the marine environment.
